I love to read. I remember the first book I ever fell in love with- Goodnight, Moon. Something about the Great Green Room and the old lady whispering “Hush,” sparked my imagination, and I knew that once I understood how to decipher the words on those pages, I would be transported to another world. And I wasn’t disappointed. There is no greater vacation than the escape from reality one finds between the pages of a well-written book.
With enough imagination and a talented writer, you can be anyone, go anywhere, experience anything. Books are a buffer between us and the world. Who cares about waiting at the DMV if you’re holding Sue Grafton’s latest Alphabet Mystery in your hands? Long wait at the doctor’s office? Pull out your favorite battered copy of To Kill a Mockingbird and visit with Boo Radley for a bit. The time will fly. It doesn’t matter how many times I read Gone with the Wind. I am still waiting for the day that I can believe with all of my heart that Scarlett really will get Rhett back. And when I need to laugh out loud and maybe shed a few tears, I take a trip to a little town called Lonesome Dove, where I always feel welcome.
My favorite genres are historical fiction (like Sharon Kay Penman, Diana Gabaldon) and mysteries (such as Sue Grafton, Agatha Christie, Deanna Raybourn), and of course the classics (think Bronte sisters, Jane Austen, E. M. Forster). I also love some lesser known titles and authors that I hope you will discover through Legacy Vintage. My desire in contributing to The Vintage Reader is to highlight some of these talented authors from bygone days so that you, too, may wish to travel to some unexpected places.
